Learning Engineering Approaches to Enhance Your Practice and Advance the Field

With Kristen Torrence

Spreading awareness and adoption of learning engineering processes and practices as an approach to L&D has the potential to revolutionize how learning solutions are created and set a new standard of excellence for learning design and development.

As designers, we by nature, are also experimenters, offering our best designed solutions to be implemented under the assumption that they will produce promising learning outcomes.

It’s our responsibility to discover and use the most optimal learning strategies for our target learners and learning context. This is where learning engineering comes into play.

Learning engineering is a multidisciplinary approach that applies learning sciences, human-centered and engineering design methodologies, and data-informed decision-making to support learners, providing a set of evidence-based principles and practices that learning designers can draw from to create quality learning solutions.

We must shift our mindsets toward data-driven processes, seek to learn what learning design elements in our solutions work so we can scale what works, iterate on what doesn’t, and build a more robust conception of the efficacy of our learning solutions, effectiveness of our selected instructional methods, diverse learner population, and implementation contexts.

Learning engineering is applicable to the creation of all learning solutions and particularly useful if you’re creating cutting edge innovative solutions, serving unique learner populations, novel learning contexts, integrating accessibility features, or pushing the envelope in some way. Let’s prioritize investigating and validating effective and novel learning design methodologies that are scalable and replicable.

Harnessing AI Literacy: A Competency Framework for Transformative L&D Practices

With Stella Lee

This keynote offers a deep dive into practical strategies for integrating AI literacy in L&D. We’ll explore how foundational AI knowledge, data fluency, and critical thinking are crucial for today’s workforce. By highlighting diverse AI use cases and ethical considerations, we emphasize the role of L&D professionals in guiding responsible AI practices. The talk also focuses on AI pedagogy, demonstrating how AI tools can be effectively integrated into learning initiatives. Lastly, we discuss AI’s role in shaping the future of work, emphasizing the importance of reskilling and upskilling in an AI-augmented environment.

In this session, we will:

Define AI literacy and introduce the AI literacy framework
Explore key AI literacy competencies and their relevance in modern L&D practices
Practical steps for L&D practitioners to implement AI literacy effectively

Whether you’re just starting your journey or are well-versed in the AI education landscape, this session will provide you with actionable insights to implementing AI literacy in your practices.

ART:Evidence-Based Framework for Designing Culturally Representational Instructional Comics

With Kevin Thorn

Knowing your audience is a fundamental step in the analysis of designing training. Learner context analysis is critical to understanding an international audience regarding cultural differences in both language and visuals. This level of analysis takes a deeper look into the audience’s environment, from general mannerisms to specific cultural norms and dress. This session introduces a simple framework to guide you through the process of designing visual narratives in the comic medium.

Using this framework, I will follow a use case for a project designed for labor and delivery nurses in northern India and the challenges faced when designing an instructional comic. Choosing the comic medium as a vehicle to tell a narrative story through instruction becomes even more critical when writing the script and preparing the artwork.

In this session, I will present the ART framework: A = Authentic, R = Relatable, T = Transcendental. ART is a framework I developed to help guide the design of an instructional comic to ensure cultural awareness was always present and that any metaphorical designs were culturally acceptable.

You will learn how following the ART framework guides the challenges when designing characters, from skin tone to clothing and shoes to their respective physical environments. You will see how cultural understanding was addressed and how careful the scriptwriting process was to avoid offensive words and phrases. Finally, you will see the benefits of using ART to increase retention, change behaviors, and transfer knowledge among the learner audience, as well as the impact of how this instructional comic made a difference in reducing infant mortality rates across the region.

You will learn:

  • The ART Framework
  • Why the comic medium was chosen as a solution for this learning problem
  • The challenges that we faced when writing the instruction for a specific international audience
  • How to write personality into characters that relate to the target audience
  • The process through character modeling and the importance of attention to detail
  • How to cast the right voice actors to play the role of the characters
  • The results and impact this instructional comic made in reducing infant mortality rates
